Discussion and questions related to the course Practical TIG Welding
Hello.
In "Sharpening Tungsten and Stick Out" module says that "Sharpening this point more doesn't necessarily focus the arc more" and "This means that the 45° arc will create a slightly wider heat zone" (in comparison to 30°). But if we try to search google pics by "tig sharpening" - we can see that a larger angle (45 instead of 30) gives a narrower(more focused) heat zone.
Could you please clarify, how to understand it correctly?
Thanks, Alexander.
Thanks Alexander and sorry for the delay, this does depend a lot on the amperage and situation your welding in, for 90% of the situations a tungsten at 45 to 30 degrees of angle will visually create very little difference in the arc pattern, the results from this tungsten at either of those angles or between them will be almost the same. For very low amperage small welds such as thin wall stainless tube with perfect fit up I like to sharpen my tungsten to 30 degrees as it seems to pinpoint the arc into the small seam and create a nice fine weld.
To simplify this 0-75 amps I would use 30 degrees, 75-200 amps 45 degrees
