I would like to ask a question about heat treating chromoly. If i were to construct a chassis out of chromoly and weld it, would i have to heat treat the whole chassis or just around the weld area?

Hi George. You would have to heat the whole chassis, it would need to be oven heated to a tempreture then cooled slowly to normalize the structure, its a difficult process and one that isnt required if the welding is done correctly (With TIG)

Hi Nigel,

Do you have any experience of brazing Chromoly, as opposed to welding?

I've worked with classic Jaguar E-types and their engine frames are gas brazed. I'm wondering if it's worth developing that skill and applying it to chassis and component construction, or is a proper TiG weld superior in all respects?

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Nigel,

Thanks a lot for the information, i am building a buggy with a mild steel frame and im thinking about making the next one out of chromoly!
